Getting Ready for your Visit

What should I expect on my first visit?
On your first visit, your physical therapist will perform a comprehensive evaluation to determine how physical therapy can best address the unique challenges you are facing. During your initial evaluation, we will ask about your medical history and conduct a physical examination, including any necessary tests that will help us gain a better understanding of your condition. We will then create a customized treatment program, tailored specifically to you. Your personalized program will focus on improving pain levels, mobility, strength and flexibility, as well as address limitations with daily activities. Your therapist will work with you one on one to help you achieve your goals and eventually help you self-manage your symptoms in the future.
What should I wear?
Please wear loose fitting clothing that will allow your physical therapist access to the treatment area.
How long will each session last?
The length of treatment varies depending on the condition and needs of each patient. On average, sessions last anywhere between an hour to an hour and a half.

Physician's Referral

Do I need a prescription or referral for physical therapy?

New York State law allows direct patient access to a physical therapist with some exceptions. This means that the majority of patients are allowed to be seen by a physical therapist for 10 visits or 30 days (whichever comes first), before having to see your doctor. Exceptions apply and prescriptions are still required for patients with Medicare, Workers Compensation, and No-Fault. HIP insurance requires an electronic referral from your primary doctor's receptionist, which is easy to do. Just call your physician's staff, and they should be able to help you out!

What is New York State Direct Access?

New York state law allows for direct access to physical therapy, which gives you the opportunity to be evaluated and treated by a licensed physical therapist without first seeing your physician for a prescription. Under this law, you are allowed to be seen by a physical therapist for 10 visits or 30 days (whichever comes first), before having to see your doctor.

With your safety in mind, we will always refer you to the appropriate physician if we believe there is a need to do so.
